Two people, including a 47-year-old Fort Smith man, were killed in the early hours of Monday morning in a crash that occurred on Interstate 40 at the 198-mile marker in Prairie County.
According to information released by the Arkansas State Police, a 2018 Nissan and a 2008 Chevrolet were involved in a head-on collision when the Chevrolet was traveling eastbound in the westbound Lane of the interstate.
The preliminary report said James C. Sutherland of Fort Smith, who was a passenger in the Nissan.was killed in the head-on crash. A second individual, Cynthia s Brown, of Abbeville South Carolina who was also a passenger in the Nissan died as well,, according to police
According to the police, the drivers of the westbound Nissan and the eastbound Chevrolet both made corrective steering efforts in an attempt to avoid each other resulting in the head-on collision on the south side shoulder.
In addition to the two deaths, four other people were injured, including two minors. Thirty-seven-year-old Tiffany Nance of Fort Smith, who was the driver of the Nissan, and 42-year-old Luis Vega Romero of Las Vegas, who was the driver of the Chevrolet, were both taken to hospitals.
The two minor children, who were taken to a children's hospital, were both in the Nissan, They were not identified in the report.
According to investigating officer James Dalla Taylor of the Arkansas State Police, the weather was clear and the road was dry at the time of the accident.
