Former Poteau head coach who resigned in August under investigation by the Oklahoma State Board of Education

A mystery surrounding the resignation of a high school football coach in eastern Oklahoma in late August has now taken on new life after it was announced this week the former coach is under investigation.

Greg Werner, the former head football coach at Poteau High School, is under investigation by the Oklahoma State Board of Education. Werner, who has been a member of the Oklahoma High School Coaches Hall of Fame,e since 2022, resigned in late August, a mere four days before the team’s first game.

At the time of the resignation, Scott Kempenich, Superintendent of Poteau Public Schools, expressed his surprise and disappointment at Werner’s resignation.

“Coach Werner has been a staple of our football program,” Kempenich said. "It’s a big hit to our community, but we will all work together and move forward".

Werner led the Poteau Pirates to a 4A state championship in 2019.

Former defensive coordinator Mike Odom, a 17-year veteran with the Poteau football program, has stepped in as the head coach and led the Pirates to a 201 record on the year, with wins over McAlester and Tulsa Noah in the past two weeks after opening the season with a 14010 loss against Booneville.
