A fatal accident occurred in the early hours of April 1 at the intersection of Towson Avenue and S.M. Street in Fort Smith, leaving a 19-year-old woman dead. The incident, reported at 5:28 a.m., involved a collision between a vehicle and a bicyclist, according to the Fort Smith Police Department.
The deceased, identified as Sydney Owens, 19, a resident of Fort Smith, was riding her bicycle through the intersection when the accident occurred.
Preliminary reports indicate that a 2012 Chevrolet, traveling southbound on Towson Avenue, proceeded through a green light. At the same time, Owens, heading through the intersection, turned southbound and was struck by the vehicle.
The weather was clear, and the road conditions were dry at the time of the crash, ruling out environmental factors as a cause. Emergency responders transported Owens to Baptist Fort Smith, where she was pronounced deceased.
Her body was later transferred to the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office for further examination. Authorities have notified her next of kin.
The driver of the Chevrolet was not reported injured, and no additional injuries were noted in the incident,
