Law Enforcement: Preliminary investigation of weekend shooting at ATU indicates tragic accident

Officials have identified the teenager shot and killed in Russellville Saturday night as being 19-year-old Jack Poole.


Pool, a resident of Hattieville and a 2023 graduate of Sacred Heart high School in Morrilton was a sophomore at Arkansas Tech University. The school said on Monday that Poole had declared nursing as his major entering his sophomore year st ATU.


The Arkansas State Policebwere called in to help with the investigation, but Russellville police have indicated that the death could be the result of an accidental discharge.


Arkansas Tech University officials revealed that Poole's death occurred in ATU housing at the Pope County institution. The location of the incident was said to have been in the 400 block of Ashwood Street.


In a news release, Arkansas Tech conveyed the follow message:


“Arkansas Tech University expresses its condolences to the family and friends of Jack Poole,” said Dr. Russell Jones, ATU president. “There are no words that can adequately bring comfort at a time like this. Our university community will be present and ready to assist in the grieving process for those close to Jack.”

The funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morrilton with Father Jack Harris officiating. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Morrilton.


Vigil will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at Harris Funeral Chapel in Morrilton. Visitation will be after the vigil from 6:30-8 p.m.
