Motivation for a career in true crime writing spurred at early age following murder of beloved uncle years ago

By Dennis McCaslin - Editor and Publisher

Renowned true crime writer for Today in Fort Smith, Sienna Snider, has established a solid career for herself via painstaking research and poignant storytelling. Her work has been greatly impacted by a personal tragedy that lies behind her passion to her career: her beloved uncle's murder.

Even at the age of twelve, Sienna experienced something that would alter her life forever. Growing up in Little Rock, Sienna was close to her uncle—a colorful man well-known for his warmth and exuberance. Her family was devastated by his abrupt and violent death, which also permanently altered Sienna's developing psyche.

"We were very close," Sienna recalls. "He was more than just an uncle; he was a mentor and a friend. Losing him in such a brutal way was devastating."

Details of the crime remain a closely guarded secret within Sienna’s family, who prefer to keep his name and specific circumstances private out of respect for their collective grief. What is known is that her uncle was murdered under circumstances that left the family in shock and sorrow. The investigation that followed was long and grueling, and while the perpetrator was eventually caught and convicted, the trauma of the event lingered.

Sienna’s personal loss fueled her interest in criminal justice and journalism. As she navigated her grief, she found solace and purpose in understanding the mechanisms of crime and the pursuit of justice.

This path led her to study journalism with a focus on true crime, determined to bring attention to victims' stories and advocate for their families.

"Experiencing such a loss firsthand gave me a unique perspective," Sienna explains. "I understand the pain and the need for answers. It’s what drives my passion for true crime writing."

Sienna's work is distinguished by her dedication to finding the truth and her strong sense of empathy. Her own experience enables her to establish a deep connection with victim families, providing them with more than just a professional interest—rather, she offers a genuine understanding of their suffering and their yearning for justice.

"I strive to tell these stories with the compassion and respect they deserve," Sienna states. "Each case I cover is a reminder of my uncle and the unresolved grief that comes with such a loss."

..Ever since she began working at Today in Fort Smith, Sienna has handled many cases with the same attention to detail and commitment. Her skill at fusing emotional storytelling with minute details has helped raise awareness of numerous high-profile, unresolved cases, assisting in the search for justice and offering consolation to bereaved families.

In addition to shaping her career, Sienna's personal connection to her job has fortified her desire to speak up for those who lack a voice. Her narrative aims to bring the memories of people lost to crime to life and make sure their stories are never forgotten, going beyond merely reciting facts.

Even after all these years, Sienna's uncle continues to be a source of guidance for her. Through her work, she continues to pay tribute to his memory, directing her sorrow into an unwavering quest for justice and the truth.

"I always remember why I do what I do because of my uncle's memory," Sienna muses. "I create stories and cover cases with him in mind at all times. My mission is to make sure that every victim's tale is heard and that no family must endure suffering in silence."
