A two-vehicle accident Thursday night on I-40 westbound near mile marker 294, approximately three miles west of Vian killed an Oregon man and sent another person to a hospital with undetermined injuries.
After the first wreck, a Sequoyah County deputy, who was working the accident scene, was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a 70-year-old driover from Eufaula.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) reported the initial collision involved a vehicle driven by Robert Jaramillo, 38, of Coquille, Oregon, who sustained multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene after being pinned in his vehicle for about an hour.
Jaramillo was the sole occupant of his vehicle.
The second vehicle’s driver, whose identity remains unknown, was critically injured and airlifted to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. This driver was also trapped in their vehicle for about an hour.
Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, and airbags deployed in both vehicles. The accident occurred at 9:40 p.m.
In the aftermath of that wreck, Sequoyah County deputy, Duwaine Chase was seriously injured while directing traffic at the accident site.
He was assisting the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and first responders when a car struck him and crashed into his patrol unit.
Deputy Chase was flown to a hospital in Little Rock with serious injuries, and his current condition is unknown.
The OHP investigation is ongoing. The driver was not arrested, according to Sequoyah County officials.
